Don’t Be One Of Those Guys Who Loses Their Bank Account Just Because They Didn’t Feel Like Changing Their Oil

By , September 30, 2010

If you’ve ever met someone who didn’t think changing the oil in their vehicle was important then you know what crazy is too.  I actually met someone who thought that changing the oil in his car was a waste of time.  This guy swore up and down that “oil is oil” so he used the cheapest motor oil he could find for his poor car’s engine.  He truly believes that all oil is the same and it can’t be worn out…it’ll just last forever.  Well he is in for a nasty surprise because bad things happen when you don’t change your motor oil.

Your engine uses air to burn gasoline in the combustion chamber.  This creates exhaust gas.  Exhaust gas is corrosive and without something to counteract the effects it will make the oil in your engine turn acidic.  Acid is what causes corrosion!  After time your engine will deteriorate.   You are basically ruining your engine if you don’t prevent acid formation.  It takes time though, your problems will be there but you won’t see them at 5,000 miles…more like 50,000.

The detergents in the motor oil keep the engine clean from sludge and varnish.  This guy who refuses to change his oil is going to wind up with a huge amount of sludge and varnish in his motor and in the meantime his oil will continue to break down.  His sad choice to use cheap oil, and his laziness or ignorance not to change it are going to cause his engine great harm.  The detergents in his oil (what little there were to begin with) will be depleted and his engine will be soiled with muck and grime.  Ultimately he’ll end up with hot spots and poor circulation as certain areas get mucked up with grime, ending up with localized mechanical failures since lubricant will seem to be his motor’s out of reach luxury while the engine’s rumming.

Can you imagine how dirty it will become inside your engine?

Once his filter is totally plugged, he’ll be lucky if his oil pressure sensor detects a lack of pressure.  There’s a bypass valve(spring loaded) in oil filters that is supposed to open when you start your engine and the cold engine will mean that the oil is thick.  Even if the oil filter media is totally plugged, it should still open.

Unfortunately a cheap oil filter has a cheap composite bypass valve that is prone to sticking.  Running a filter over time with plugged media is putting a lot of faith in a cheap little valve that if it fails will create an oil starved engine situation.  Don’t count on this engine disaster to happen years down the road either.

Bottom line is you have to control the acid level in your engine and you have to keep the oil filtered.  If you happen to be like this guy I met and share his ideology that “oil is oil” then you might want to make sure you have a waiting list of suckeres who want to buy your car once your engine starts to go downhill.

My suggestion is that you use the best motor oil there is and change your oil filter with your oil filter at the recommended intervals specified for your vehicle.
